We can announce that DFMC has been successful in securing $150 000 in funding from the Queensland Government for a feasibility study into a soybean processing facility for the Mossman region.

The feasibility study would evaluate production suitability, potential yield, infrastructure and processing requirements, economic viability and downstream regional benefits.  It would also assess Mossman’s capacity to support the feed requirements of North Queensland’s dairy, beef, and poultry (broiler) industries.

NQ’s intensive livestock industries are vital contributors to regional employment, food security, and economic activity. However, these sectors continue to face persistent challenges, including feed availability, high transport and freight costs and a heavy reliance on feed inputs sourced from southern Australia or overseas.

As a farmer-owned and operated co-operative, DFMC can appreciate the challenges Mossman growers now face following the mill’s permanent closure. At the same time, we recognise the strategic value of developing a locally grown and processed protein source in the North to support our member suppliers and broader food production systems.

This feasibility study will build the case for private investment in a soybean processing facility that could deliver long-term benefits for agriculture and food production across the North.
